It never stops… Never… I can’t get away…help me… Please…………………… please.
Christian sat there watching the other boys spar. He’d never been accepted by these boys. No, why should he be? He was different. Very different.
Christian was a 16 year old boy with a horrible home life. He was despised by not only the other boys and girls his age but by his family. With the curse that was laid on him at birth he grew oddly. Handsome though he was, his skin was blue. ‘Why am I like this???’ He would think every day; no one ever told him about the curse. Why should they? He was nothing special to them. But the curse did give him something… He of course didn’t know if he imagined it or not but every now and then he herd a voice. Everyone thought he was crazy… She asked for help, trusted him. And she always said the same thing, she was weaker today but speaking in his head again, as loud as if she were right next to him.
“It never stops… Never… I can’t get away… help me…
Please……………………” she stopped for a second, her jeweled voice quavering “Christian……. Please.”
Well that was odd he thought. She had said his name.
Iera… What was that? A name… Such a beautiful name… Was it hers? No she was just a figment of his imagination.
Christian, run. I can’t protect you anymore… Run.
Huh?
Chapter 1
“Christian!!! Get in here right this instant!!!
How many times do I have to tell you not to go outside and bother the other children?!?!” It was rhetorical. No one wanted him there he Knew it… But he was almost an adult now, well at least age wise. All of the boys in his village were required to complete a task before being assigned to a master and once all of there training was complete they would be considered men, well and eligible. Christian didn’t want that though, he dreamed of being a ranger, a shadow and a protector. He Knew everyone feared the rangers, they didn’t come in contact with other people much.
When the castles were infiltrated they were the first blamed, but he knew better. Cali had come to see him not that long ago. About a year and a half actually, Christian was frightened, his father had always warned him about the trouble they caused. His mother had seen the ranger and his father chased him off. But not before Cali’ told him he’d come back. Ever since then Christian would not be allowed out on his own. Even the village children would let him join in if the ranger were around.
‘How pathetic.’ Christian thinks. They’re afraid of me to. Afraid of me becoming more of a nightmare.’
“Help…” There was that voice again…
Someone taps his shoulder and he almost jumps out of his skin,
“A little jumpy lately aren’t we Chris?”
“Cali’!!!”
“Shhhh!” He says and ducks down. “I told you I would be back but you can’t draw attention to yourself.”
“Too late, my mother is about to call me in for dinner…”
“Meet me in the forest tonight after they fall asleep. You will know where to find me.” And with that he leaves.
“Christian I said come in here!!!”
“Yes Mother.”
By the time dinner was over it was getting dark out.
“Now Look Christian you aren’t going out there tonight. Your trials start tomorrow and you need your rest.”
“I’m not taking them.”
“Why?!?!?!?!”
“There is no craft in this village I could possibly want to do and anyways No one would take me.”
“That’s not true.”
“It is mother and you know its true.”
“It’s not just for a craft honey. If you pass all of them then you become a man.”
“Mother, I don’t need some stupid trial to tell me when I’m a man!”
The door slammed and Christian entered the Forest. What he expected to find was Cal’i waiting for him, what he didn’t expect was the putrid mass of vile creatures pressing in on him with their fangs barred and swords in their hands. What he expected to find was Cal’i waiting for him, not in fear ‘with his back against a wall.
