Hey.. hope I put this in the right spot, lol. If not, then can it be moved please? Anyway.. In my Global Civilizations class, we are learning about World War I. The other day, I was reading in my textbook about the assassination of the Archduke Francis Ferdinand, and I noticed something that stuck out to me. The name of the secret group of Serbians that were planning to kill the Archduke was The Black Hand. Ring any bells? This is also the name of Galbatorix's secret group of spies in Surda. I was just wondering what you thought about this, because I thought the historical reference was pretty cool. But that's the thing.. was it planned by Christopher Paolini that the names would be the same? Personally, I don't think that it was a coincidence. The Black Hand.. it's exactly the same name, and both groups were groups of spies. So.. opinions? Ideas? ;D

You are probably right. He seems to be very smart and he probably wanted to include something that interested him in his books. People seem to think that he has also taken ideas and other things from LOTR and other books and morphed them into his own. I can't really say what I think on that matter, though, because I have never read LOTR (just the movies).
That is interesting though. Good eye.
This is the right section, so don't worry. It's not really a theory - its just something you noticed.

Probably like how Paolini put "Einstein" as a scientist in the Dominance of Fate.
As for the Lord of the Rings plagiarism, I could go into detail about everything Paolini stole and yadda yadda yadda but I don't have much time on me at the moment.
Maybe another board later.

I agree w/poker and Ice. But hey Paolini is'nt the only one who stole stuff and twisted it. Rowling took LOTR and Chronicals of Narnia ideas and twisted those...

But it doesn't matter how many people steal. It doesn't make it right and it doesn't excuse Paolini.

I think thats kind of cool that you noticed that. I have to agree with Poker and Ice - it doesn't excuse him from "borrowing".

No It doesn't and the worst part is people don't notice anymore because it happens so often.
