Prologue
…Crap, I’m late thought John. He was racing against time to get to his wife to make it up for her for missing their anniversary. That stupid kid will probably be to mock me. I’ll show him when he looks at what I’ve got. He’ll finally leave me alone. Quickly he glanced at the package in the passenger seat to make sure it was still there. It was a small round ball shaped object rapped in sooty, brown paper.
...1 kilometre behind the car was a thin wraith-like figure shadowing it. Nimbly it sped up and jumped on to the roof of the car without making a sound. Once it had its balance, It cut a hole in the boot with something and quietly slipped in.
... What was that? John swore he had heard something from the back of the car. He pulled over to the side of the road to see what was wrong. Once he was out of the car he walked slowly around to the back. Before he got there he noticed that the boot was open. I thought I shut that? As he got to the back the last thing he saw before the figure rushed him was bright, white fangs.
Chapter 1
Tapping echoed around the classroom as Mrs Dalwiger wrote down everyone’s homework. The dusty chalk scraping over the blackboard with a screeching sound.
“Now everyone, make sure you do all of your homework, especially you Michael Evander.” said Mrs Dalwiger.
All of a sudden the siren came piercing into the room signaling the class was over and everyone left the room before they got a lecture form Mrs Dalwiger about how important homework is. Once I was out I tried to find my best friend, Opal Vesuvius, an incredible person who I have been friends with since Kindi.
“Hey Opal, wait up for me!” running to catch up with her.
“Michael, did you know that you are extremely slow at getting out of class. I mean you of all would want to get out of there as fast as you could.” flicking her long brown hair over her shoulder.
"Yeah, yeah I know. So what do you want to do on this beautiful day today?” The sun was out and it was the middle of summer, perfect for body boarding.
“I wasn’t thinking about what to do on this beautiful day." "I was thinking more about what do in the mysterious night." "How about we go and check out that old abandoned hotel on the outskirts?” she pleaded with the biggest puppy dog eyes possible.
“Why, what rumors have you dredged up about that old place?”
“Well, I’ve been searching around for anything strange, because as you know we haven’t had many expeditions lately. So I decided last night to head on down to the Black Hog.”
“When I got there, I sat down and waited for the regulars to arrive. But before they got there, this group of travelers came in and began talking about the abandoned hotel. I crept closer and then I heard one of them saying that he saw something that could scare anyone so he ran out of there like lightning. When his friends asked him what it was he said it was an old lady with a scream that could wake the dead. So I have figured out he heard a necromancers tune or it is a banshee so I reckon we should go and have a look.”
“First of all what can banshee’s do?" "I don’t plan on nearly getting killed again.” There was this one time where Opal wanted to go steal a newly born dragon egg. I’ve still got the burns from that one.
Opal replied as if she was expecting me to ask that. “Well they can scream so that your spirit is lifted out of your body.”
“So we can just use ear plugs, cant we?”
“Nope won’t work. Their screams can penetrate any substance and they only fade with distance. So our only chance of destroying it is to catch it by surprise or shutting it up.”
“Another supernatural quest where we can get killed with a flick of a finger, great. So when can we attack it?” I was already considering if Opal actually needed me for this one.
“Well, they are blind and at their most vulnerable point when the sun is setting.”
“I will try to get out there but I might not be able to.”
“Alright, well if you do get out there meet me at the park at 4:00. Okay?”
“Yep, I’ll be there if I can.” How little did I know that this trip would change my life forever.
When I got home I quickly grabbed a snack from the fridge and ran upstairs to my bedroom before my foster mum caught me for a lecture on how bad it is to be late home from school. Once I was in my room I set about preparing for tonight’s hunt. I delved through all my dirty clothes and my books to find my hunting knife. I then got my lucky coin that my real father gave to me before he disappeared. That gets me thinking about my birth parents and why they left me. From what I have found out from my foster parents and newspapers, they went on a trip to go camping in the mountains and they never came back. That was when I was two years old, 14 years ago. I finally find the coin; it is a old gold coin with a hole through the middle. It has a strange inscription on it that even Opal can’t read. But none the less it is my lucky coin and I take it on every single hunting trip.
All of a sudden there is a knocking at my door.
“Michael! I know you're in there. Get out here so I can have a talk with you!” My foster mum Lorise always has talks with her foster kids. Either that or her husband John get in a drunken rage and beats them. Luckily I’m always out with Opal so I’ve never had it but when I get back I see the bruises on the other kids and I vow that I will get revenge for them one day.
“No I’m going out with Opal and there is nothing you can do to stop me!” I yell at the still closed door. Before she can think of a witty remark to throw in my face I run to the window open it and climb out onto the roof. I slide to the edge and lower myself down on the crawler. Once I was down I started off in the direction of the park to go meet Opal.
Once I got there I couldn’t find Opal anywhere, so I go sit down on the bench and wait for her to get there. All of a sudden she comes out from behind me and starts patting me on my shoulder.
“Um… Opal, are you feeling ok?” she’s not a very touchy, feely sort of person.
“I just feel sorry for you for the fact that John’s dead.” My jaw drops a mile.
“Wh…what did say?”
“What didn’t you know, oh I am so sorry Michael.” She says as she slides her hair behind her ear. “It was all over the news his body was found out in the desert with his car. Do you still want to go on with the hunt?”
I slump against the hard back of the bench. I can’t believe that John is dead. At least the other foster kids will be safer now.“No I’ll go, I need something to get my mind off this.” I say, still in disbelief that John is dead.
“Alright then let's head off before the sun gets too low.”
After a few minutes we come across the old hotel. Its covered in vines and all boarded up. Rumors about the place is say that it was once a respectable hotel but one guest came along and slaughtered the whole place in one night then disappeared. We walked up the stairs to the entrance and had a look through the cracks in the boards. Inside it is very dark and damp. Everything is covered in cobwebs and an inch thick layer of dust. I look over to Opal.
“Did you bring your crowbar? I think we might need it.”
She reaches behind her to her backpack and swiftly pulls out her crowbar with a smile.
“I never leave home without it.”
She eases it in between the cracks of the boards and breaks the rotting wood away.
We slip in through the gap into the hotel.
That’s where the trouble really began.
